What To Expect During a Well-Child Visit

At Maryland Children Health Center, Dr. Mary Ogunsanya can providewell-child visits. But what exactly happens during these visits? Understanding these trips is important if you want to give your child the support that they needs to be healthy. Here’s what you need to know about these appointments.

What to Expect During Your Visit

A typical well visit is a comprehensive examination of your child’s overall health that gauges things like their progression and maturity. The goal of these exams is to ensure that your child is healthy and developing according to expectations. Each of these processes is simple and focused and helps you and your child better understand her health. They include:

  • Physical Exam: Your well-child visit in Glenn Dale & Oxon Hill, MD, starts with a quick exam that measures your child’s weight, BMI, and height. Dr. Ogunsanya will also check their heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels and examine their ears, eyes, and throat.
  • Development Check: Next, Dr. Ogunsanya will test your child’s developmental milestones, including what skills they know and how well they’re crawling, walking, and talking. They’ll ask you and them questions to gauge their progress, including any sicknesses they may have experienced.
  • Vaccinations: Finally, your child will get vaccinated against various diseases, such as whooping cough, polio, and measles. Dr. Ogunsanya will set up a schedule that helps your child stay protected against these dangerous diseases.

Knowing When to Schedule These Visits

How often should you schedule these visits for your child? That all depends on their age and development. Younger children will need more frequent well-visits, sometimes as often as every month or two in their early years. As they age, these appointments become less frequent and require less work from you, ensuring that they get the help they need.

For example, the first should be between 3-5 days after her birth. The second comes about a month later, then the third a month after that. Now, you typically start staggering the visits every two months, every three months, and when they reach two years, every half a year. Finally, you should schedule one every year after their third year until they’re 21.

  • "I was in this place as a young girl. I wasn't bad but the people who had me in my family kept beating and raping me. I began to start running away. I had no one to protect me. I had gone in to Montrose medical place first. I was so scared but they kept me in medical until they could get me in the children's center.
My foster mom picked me up on Dec 2rth and bought me my first new coat. She and her family were so good to me.
There was a lasted at the children's center who have me a bible and looked after me mainly cause he knew I wasn't a bad girl there were just bad people hurting me."

  • "My daughters are 19 & 18 yrs old, they have been going here since they were toddlers also to the Oxon Hill location. I selected this practice because keeping your time off at work limited when u have children is important. Their office is opened until 7pm on certain nights. Which is great because a parent does not have to take time off of work with a doctor's office opened this late. There is never a long waiting time, service is prompt, friendly & kid happy!!! 😚😙"
