The Well-Child Visit Schedule: Recommended Checkups From Birth to Adolescence

When it comes to well-child visits in Glenn Dale & Oxon Hill, MD, there is a schedule that is produced by the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics). Most pediatricians adhere at least roughly to this recommendation. Dr. Mary Ogunsanya is a board-certified pediatrician at the Maryland Children Health Center and provides complete care for your child when they are sick and when they are well.

Well-child visits are designed to help parents and pediatricians learn to communicate about the health of the child. Not only does the visit center around getting health information about the child, it is the time for parents to ask the questions that have been keeping them awake.

Infant child-visits

Newborn

As soon as you get home from the hospital, it is time to make your first well-child visit. This happens in the first week of your baby's life. The baby's measurements are taken, and the pediatrician makes sure that the baby is thriving. Parents should be prepared to discuss sleeping, eating, and bodily functions as well as how they are coping.

In the first year, well-visits will be scheduled at

  • 1 month old
  • 2 months old
  • 4 months old
  • 6 months old
  • 9 months old
  • 12 months old

The vaccination schedule will be discussed and put into action if your baby has no health reasons to avoid any vaccines. Milestones will be accessed and your child's growth will be measured against all other children of a similar age.

Toddler

Toddler well-child visits take place at:

  • 15 months old
  • 18 months old
  • 2 years old
  • 2 ½ years old
  • 3 years old

Child Well Visits

Well-child visits in Glenn Dale & Oxon Hill, MD take place yearly from age three.  These visits continue along the same lines as the earlier visit with the addition of checking vision, hearing, and oral health as well as general nutrition. Vaccinations are also provided on the AAP schedule.

Adolescent Checkup

Adolescent well-child visits take place yearly, but at this stage, it is more about the relationship between your child and your pediatrician. Your child should be allowed to be examined without you being present in the room. You count on your pediatrician to provide the answers your child may need about eating issues, sex, bullying, drugs, and birth control that they may not discuss if you are present.

  • "I was in this place as a young girl. I wasn't bad but the people who had me in my family kept beating and raping me. I began to start running away. I had no one to protect me. I had gone in to Montrose medical place first. I was so scared but they kept me in medical until they could get me in the children's center.
My foster mom picked me up on Dec 2rth and bought me my first new coat. She and her family were so good to me.
There was a lasted at the children's center who have me a bible and looked after me mainly cause he knew I wasn't a bad girl there were just bad people hurting me."

  • "My daughters are 19 & 18 yrs old, they have been going here since they were toddlers also to the Oxon Hill location. I selected this practice because keeping your time off at work limited when u have children is important. Their office is opened until 7pm on certain nights. Which is great because a parent does not have to take time off of work with a doctor's office opened this late. There is never a long waiting time, service is prompt, friendly & kid happy!!! 😚😙"
